With Morgan Alexander’s recent announcement that he will not be serving coffee at Amocat Cafe any longer (so he can focus on his passion for Craft Brewing with Tacoma Brewing Company there in the evenings) I know many of us living and consuming coffee in the St Helens District have been wondering where we’re going to be getting our coffee shop fix! It’s not that we don’t have options (Corina Bakery up the hill on 6th and Tully’s down on 9th) but it’s been so nice have something right in the middle of our little hive. Also, (and this is unscientific) but copious amounts of caffeine are good for property values.
Enter B Sharp, a brand new coffee shop going into Opera Alley! Hooray! I was having lunch with friends and neighbors Erik & Mary at Over the Moon Cafe when we noticed the sign. We stopped by and spoke with owner Dennis Ellis and his daughter Angeleena (the manager), who say they expect to be opening on October 12th. The exterior is very small, so we had no idea when we went in that the place would be so BIG. Lots of tables, a couch, plenty of space for a band to play, and a VIP Loft Space overlooking it all. Most importantly, when I asked about Wifi he said not to worry, they ordered the good stuff.
When I asked Dennis about why he was opening a coffee shop in our neighborhood he said he loves coffee, beer, and music and wanted to be around it. “The demographics for the area are very good,” he said. “And Opera Alley had a very good energy about it.” Dennis said that while there a lot of great local coffee roasters they chose to go with Bluebeard Coffee, and pastries will be provided by Corina Bakery (this thrills me!).
“We are looking at several potential possibilities and hope to incorporate them into our product line as we go along. Our compost and coffee grounds will be going to a berry farm in Puyallup. Angeleena our manager has a degree form PLU in environmental science and won’t let me get away with anything! We are spending a little bit more on our material so they we use as much compostable items as possible.I also raise exotic chickens and you may see some unusual hard boiled eggs showing up! I will also feature craft beers and have a rotating stock of Belgian Ales.” – Dennis Ellis
Hours for B Sharp Coffee will be 7am-7pm Monday-Thursday, 7am- Midnight on Fridays, and 11am-2am on Saturday, with plans to expand. they’ll be closed on Sundays for now.
When I asked if he felt welcomed by the neighborhood Dennis said,”Everybody has been super cool and encouraging. They are all small business owners. They know that we will all benefit from each others success.”
I’m so excited. Welcome to the neighborhood!
